History of the
Henry A. Wallace
Country Life Center

Dedicated in 1996, the Henry A. Wallace Country Life Center includes the birthplace homestead of Henry A. Wallace and 40 acres of land.

The intent of the Center is to preserve the humble beginnings of Wallace. Because of his great accomplishments and contributions to the world, his principles, works, and writings are worth interpreting in the context of today's society. To be effective and relevant, the interpretation is presented using the environment, community building, education, the living arts and sustainable agriculture.

The birthplace home and land have been on the National Register of Historical Places since 1973.

Today the historical site consists of the following:

  • Restored birthplace home
  • Gathering barn
  • Walking path throughout the farm
  • Organic vegetable and fruit production for Prairie Harvest, a Community Supported Agriculture Garden
  • Outdoor interpretive and interactive artwork relating to Wallace's achievements
  • 9 acres of restored prairie grasses
  • Flower gardens
  • Orchard with apple, pear, and peach trees and currant and gooseberry bushes
  • Soil conservation practices demonstrated on the land including a pond, terrace and small woodland
